The ideal book for beginning and veteran coaches
Reviewer: A reader from Indiana

I am in my 3rd year of coaching at the Jr. High level and use this book for planning my drills and strategies for the year. Some of the terms varied from those I had heard, but the explanations and illustrations make understanding the game excellent.

This should be in every coach's library.
Reviewer: laneoc@aol.com from Normal, Illinois

Without actually trying some of the techniques outlined in the book, the whole thing might be considered positive-attitude pyscho-babble. Try some of the techniques on yourself. It's good stuff!

The book is a quick, easy read. I'll be first in line to pick up a follow up.

what a coach needs!
Reviewer: bag900m@tninet from Sweden

This is the second book from the same authors this being a little more complicated then the first focusing more on actual game play exercises. Very little in the way of "volleyball thoughts" are presented, simply exercise after exercise.

Both books are the type of books that any serious coach/trainer can't really do without giving a host of new exercises that he or she can try on their team and as such its quite good, however!

Firstly both books demand that the coach how to use/teach the correct technique otherwise they are quite useless. So know your basics before you buy these books.

Secondly a number of exercises are wrong having put the wrong lines in the wrong order etc this can be very, very confusing. It seems silly to go through all the trouble of printing a book and get the small things wrong.

Who needs these books? The coach/trainer that has run out of exercises and needs new input to create new ones.
Question: Can a coach get a better book with the same contents
Yes This is however by no means a bad book. I have given the book 3 stars and it would have gotten 4 if wasn't for all the dumb mistakes.

Synopsis
In this book, Mike Hebert shares his insights into the game and provides a step-by-step account of how he developed a winning programme at the University of Illinois. Hebert encourages coaches to think and to analyze a team and its play. He provides his personal experiences and opinions as a background, then encourages coaches to pursue their own conclusions about what to do. This book also provides ideas on game planning and coaching the match, including how to use scouting reports and statistical information to develop a game plan; three guidelines for game-plan design; how to organize pre-match, during-match, and post-match coaching responsibilities; recommendations for improving focus during a match; and five ingredients for a successful post-match team meeting. This guide contains everything coaches need to know about teaching volleyball and organizing a successful programme.

Excellent for beginners in coaching!,

Felt this copy gave excellent examples of coaching drills. Team work shows ability to exchange and compete in competition. Must hear more from this author. Reply for more questions. Must hear from you.

Likable book, but limited for developing players

Reviewer: A reader from Detroit, MI

No question Mike Hebert has paid his dues. His style of coaching is very specific and introduces it well. As good as this book is at the big picture level, I didn't get much in the way of the many small adjustment tips that prove so valuable in developing players that are learning the game. I recommend Al Scates' book ("Winning Volleyball"?) and "Karch Kiraly's Championship Volleyball", by Karch Kiraly
